These short stories are only 2 of the millions of stories of people who have made no provision for a terrible fact of life. We are fragile creatures, susceptible to the most ravaging of illnesses, often with no signs that a health crisis is on the way. We go through our lives constructing our lives. We pay attention to our clothes, our jobs, our kids. We don't have daily discussions about "What If" scenarios. After all, when we're healthy we don't have to think about the tragedies which could strike us down.
But the truth is that we are all at risk, with some of us luckier than others. We live in a world full of stresses unnatural to the human being. All day long we are exposed to unhealthy environments, from pollution to killer chemicals present in our food sources. Yet we continue with our plans and dreams, and hope for the best.
Then, when sudden illness strikes, it's often too late to be prepared. Everything takes a back seat to the illness, including your job, your clothes and even your kids. Everything is turned upside down, everything goes into a time warp, and your lives are put on hold.
But does it have to happen this way? Can you take steps today to protect yourself and your family in case a tragedy strikes? Can you be a realist about being a human being and recognize your vulnerability? Can you avoid being one of the quoted stories in some writer's chapter? What can you do today to help you tomorrow?
It's very hard to plan for the unexpected. Not to mention unpleasant and fearful.
But it can be done.
